GreenIron is a dynamic Swedish scale-up revolutionising the mining and steel industries. Our CO₂ -free process uses hydrogen to produce metals—whether from virgin ore, by-products, residuals, or waste—generating only water as a by-product. Unlike traditional coal-based methods that emit significant carbon dioxide, our technology delivers a sustainable and circular solution that minimises waste and drastically reduces emissions.
At GreenIron, we are driving a transformation in how metals are produced, supporting the global shift towards a greener, more sustainable economy.

The GreenIron Story
1971

In the late 1960s, Hans Murray, the originator of GreenIron's technology, began his research into the recycling of materials containing steel and iron. In 1971, Hans and his team succeeded in producing their first CO₂ free metal product from recycled residues in a hydrogen furnace. However, there was little interest in recycling and CO₂ free metallic materials and the project was cancelled.
2018

After the adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015, Hans, together with his son Edward, revitalised the project. GreenIron was founded in 2018 and the work began to develop the technology fand process from earlier, start filing for patents, fundraising and build up a new company.
2019

Establishment of an R&D furnace for testing and development, alongside securing several patents for GreenIron’s innovative hydrogen-based reduction process, which uses hydrogen as the energy carrier.
2020

In 2020, GreenIron continues to advance its technology at the R&D site, successfully conducting tests to reduce various materials in the furnace, including iron, nickel, copper, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc. Achieves a 100%
reduction of iron ore pellets.
2021

GreenIron secures FAM and Almi Invest GreenTech Fund as anchor investors—marking the beginning of GreenIron’s journey towards commercial production of fossil-free iron.
2022

GreenIron is selected by the jury as one of Sweden’s most prominent, innovative, and promising technology companies, earning a spot on Ny Teknik’s prestigious “33-listan”, which highlights the country’s top emerging tech companies.
2022 - 2023

Signing of several MOU:s with leading steel and mining companies as around the world such as, Rio Tinto in Australia, Geo Minco in Chile and also Stegra in Sweden.
2024

Environmental permit granted for the first full-scale production facility in Sandviken, Sweden and the construction can begin.
